Online Asynchronous RN>BSN [post-licensure]

Today's health care environment is seeing an increasing demand for baccalaureate prepared nurses. The demand is being driven by hospitals' desire to achieve Magnet Status. Magnet status requires a large percentage of nursing providing care at the patient's bedside have a baccalaureate degree in nursing. Due to the current economy and the competition for new staff nurse positions, preference is being given to baccalaureate prepared nurses. However, the majority of nurses receive their basic entry level education to the profession at the associate degree level.

An increasing number of full time registered nurse students who graduate in May and August from the associate degree program wish to continue their education at the baccalaureate level. Currently the student who graduates in August or has not completed prerequisites must wait a whole year until the following fall to enter the RN>BSN program at ODU.

Program modifications:

To accommodate this population and varying schedule needs for students entering in the fall, the School of Nursing is making the following modifications:

• Admission to the School of Nursing for the online RN>BSN program will occur twice a year, Fall and Spring.
• All courses will continue to be offered in the schedule developed for the traditional RN>BSN School of Nursing fall admission in TELETECHNET via live classroom and video streaming and online.
• The option to complete the online program in one calendar year is not available to the student who starts the program in Spring. The spring student can complete the program in 5 semesters.
• Students in the spring admission group must take Nurs 401, 363 and 458 online. They may take the other required courses via TELETECHNET, video streamed or online.
