Undergraduate Pre-Licensure Student Contest.
A "Name the Bug" contest was held among the Undergraduate Pre-Licensure nursing students. The "Bug", a health promotion tool used to encourage children to brush their teeth, joined us late this summer. Laura Haanraadts, a junior pre-licensure nursing student won the contest and a gift certificate to the bookstore for her name of "Brushington". Brushington Bug will enjoy a long tenure at wellness days and heath fairs supported by nursing students from ODU.

Promoting Patient Safety in Healthcare
Faculty: Suzanne Rita, MSN, RN
This course will explore patient safety in healthcare. Regulatory agencies that promote patient safety, human error theory and specific patient safety issues will be discussed in this class. Strategies to promote patient safety in healthcare will be described and explored. This class will be on interest for any RN that is providing care to patients in the health care setting.

Spirituality in Nursing
Faculty: Linda Bennington, MSN, RN
This course will cover spirituality and nursing from many perspectives: theoretical, historical, religious, philosophical and psychological. It will look at spirituality as a patient need in holistic care and explore the nature of spirituality as reflected in our newer and older nursing theories.

MSN program announces two new educational programs.

MSN Nurse Educator Role.
The Master of Science in nursing graduate program is offering a new Nurse Educator role option beginning in Fall 2003. Students may enroll in a full time or part time curriculum leading to the MSN or a post MSN certificate program. Classes will be offered in afternoon and evening and televised to distance sites to students admitted in the program. The deadline for application to this program is JUNE 01, 2003. MSN Nurse Leadership.
The Master of Science in Nurse Leadership Role is changing from televised to a web-based program. By Fall 2003 all Nurse Leadership courses will be offered online. The MSN graduate core courses ( N 610, 611, 640 & 613) will be televised courses. MSN PNP RECEIVES EXTENDED FIVE-YEAR RECOGNITION FOR NATIONAL CERTIFICATION BOARD. - Date: 02/12/2003
I am delighted to announce that the MSN Pediatric Nurse Practitioner Program has received an extended five year period recognition from the National Certification Board Pediatric Nurse Practitioners. Our program is one of only several in the country to have received this recognition. This recognition was awarded based on the excellent certification pass rates of our graduates and the strengths of the program. Certification pass rates for the MSN PNP program have remained at 100%.

ODU HAS HIGHEST NCLEX-RN PASS RATE IN VIRGINIA!!!
The ODU Baccalaureate Nursing Program has the highest NCLEX-RN pass rate in the state for 2002, according to a report released January 14, 2003 by the Virginia Board of Nursing. With its 91.9% overall pass rate, ODU is tops among the 12 baccalaureate nursing programs in the state. The consistently high performance of ODU graduates on the NCLEX-RN is a reflection of the exceptional students admitted to the program, as well as the dedication, quality instruction and high standards of the faculty. Cheers and congrats to ODU students and faculty!!!!

Helen Yura-Petro award

I am pleased to announce that Elisabeth J. Bradfield, an August 2002 graduate in the MSN Leadership Role has been awarded the Helen Yura-Petro award as the Outstanding Graduate Student in the Masters in Nursing program.

Ms. Bradfield received a diploma in nursing from Sentara Norfolk General School of Nursing (1990), and her Bachelors (2000) and Masters (2002) degrees in Nursing from Old Dominion University.

Ms. Bradfield was in the Naval Nurse Corps from 1990 to 1998. She is currently the manager for the Labor and Delivery areas of the Womens Health Center at Sentara Norfolk General Hopsital. In this position she has decreased nursing staff turnover, reduced costs and work to implement a new Emergency managment Policy in the hospital.

We congratulate her on this award and look forward to her continued accomplishments.
