Honors Nursing Student Project

Three ODU Nursing Honors student; Katie Blankenship, Dawn Livesay, and Laurie Sneed worked in conjunction with Tidewater Emergency Medical Services (TEMS) to plan and implement a Safety Venue at the Tidewater Emergency Medical Services [TEMS] Regional Awards Picnic on Saturday, September 10th at the Norfolk, Zoo.

Ms Sneed stated, “Considering that safety in the home, school, and play environment is a pivotal factor affecting children of all ages, races, and socioeconomic statuses, our community service project is directed at this issue.  We believe that exhibits to raise safety awareness with parents and teach children simple yet vital safety precautions would tremendously benefit our local community.”   They recruited and trained 40 ODU Nursing Students to help execute the event.

The focus of the program included bike and helmet safety, car and seatbelt safety, fire safety, 911 dialing procedure, poison safety, stranger safety, and familiarization with EMS personnel and equipment. To keep the children interested they use visual aids, written information, hands-on crafts, simulation displays, interactive games, and reinforcement prizes.
