The nurse in me..........

I’ve wanted to be an Emergency & Trauma nurse since before I can remember. I used to run a stuffed animal hospital as a kid- stitches & everything- to be sure, there was NO third party reimbursement!! I became an Emergency Medical Technician in high school & knew that I’d found my niche. Now off to college!

I graduated with a BSN from Radford University in southwestern VA. My first job as a nurse was in a cardiovascular surgery / transplant step-down unit in Fairfax, VA.It was quite a contrast from my previous jobs as a swim team coach and pool manager and as an ED nursing student/extern in the now defunct Capitol Hill Hospital in one of the rougher sections of Washington, DC! Although I love cardiac nursing, 18 months after graduation I transferred to Fairfax Hospital’s Level I trauma center & haven’t left the field.

I started graduate school at George Mason University, but transferred to Marymount University. My Master’s Degree is in Nursing Education with a minor in Critical Care. After completing my MSN, I taught part time at Marymount University until I moved to the beach and ODU.

At ODU I teach a variety of courses, but mainly senior level pre-licensure classes. I am the course coordinator for the Critical Care & Role Transition courses, and I teach an elective in Emergency Nursing. In 2000 I jumped head first into the post-licensure scene (bad news- always go in feet first!) & became a faculty mentor for the web based 401,402, 403 courses. What a learning experience for us all! I’m still can’t get used to not meeting students or having a face to put with a name.Such is life with technology.

I enjoy my job teaching & the students at ODU and love being able to balance teaching and clinical practice. I am a Certified Emergency Nurse, and, to maintain my professional certification, I continue to work flexi-pool. After another wild stint in inner-city trauma nursing (nothing beats penetrating trauma!) at Sentara Norfolk General, I’m now happily closer to home in the Emergency and Trauma Center at Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital.

The rest of me....

I was a Marine Corps brat who ended up in Virginia. I grew up outside of Fredericksburg- it was a rural place when I was there! College in Radford, then I was transplanted in Northern Virginia after school (something about a guy & a ring & a job). We moved here in 1995 and I love living at the beach. Contrary to popular belief, there is NOT traffic here!

My family includes my husband Chris (the above mentioned "guy"), our children Eric & Courtney, and our 12-year old English Setter / Lab mix Tawney (the original child). We live in an older home in VB & my hobbies include anything having to do with Jimmy Buffett, water sports, gourmet cooking & wine, and snow skiing. Now. If I only had time to do any of those things!

I look forward to getting to know each of you- even if it is only on the computer & by phone. If you distance guys would like to scan in a picture & e-mail it to me, I’d love it!
