Academic and Professional History

I received a Diploma in nursing from Piedmont Hospital School of Nursing in Atlanta, Georgia; a Bachelor of Science degree from The Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland; and a Master of Science in Nursing from The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. I am certified as a urology nurse specialist by the Certification Board for Urologic Nurses and Associates. I have worked in several health care facilities as a medical-surgical nurse, urodynamic nurse specialist, and urologic nurse consultant. I am the Past President of the Society of Urologic Nurses and Associates (SUNA), a national organization of approximately 2500 urologic nurses and allied health professionals. I am the editor of the organization’s curriculum textbook, Urologic Nursing: Principles and Practice, which was published in 1995 by the W.B. Saunders Company. In addition, I am co-editor of Urologic Nursing: A Study Guide, published by SUNA in 1996.

I have been affiliated with ODU School of Nursing since 1992. I hold a full-time faculty position with a rank of Lecturer, and am primarily responsible for coordinating a senior level didactic course in gerontological nursing and clinical instruction in adult health and rehabilitation nursing for the undergraduate generic nursing program. I also attend Nova Southeastern University where I am pursuing a doctoral degree in health care education.

Personal Tidbits

I am married to Dr. Gary Karlowicz, a neonatologist at The Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters in Norfolk, Virginia. Our only child is a 12-pound, white, toy poodle named Beauregard who is a perpetual toddler!
