Active Duty Military
Thank you for your interest in the Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree program at Old Dominion University. Both nationally and state accredited, the BSN program consists of 120 – 126 semester credits; 66 credits are in the nursing major and 54-60 credits in the liberal arts and sciences fulfill the university’s general education program.
Two curriculum schedules are available: a traditional schedule designed for students who have met the minimal prerequisite requirements for admission; and an accelerated schedule designed for students who have completed the majority of the departmental and general education requirements prior to admission to the major.
Traditional Schedule
The traditional format requires minimal prerequisite courses for admission (Biology, Chemistry, English & Sociology) with the nursing major scheduled over three academic years of fall, spring and summer semester courses. This plan is best suited for students with significant general education and departmental requirements remaining upon admission to the major. Courses and clinical experiences are scheduled during weekdays.
Non-traditional Accelerated Schedule
The non-traditional accelerated format requires completion of a majority of the departmental and general education requirements prior to admission to the nursing major. Courses in the major are scheduled in fall, spring and summer semesters for two calendar years. This plan is best suited to students seeking a second bachelor’s degree and/or those who have completed all of the 100-200 level courses found on the BSN curriculum guide. Courses and clinical experiences are scheduled during weekdays. This plan is available to AMEDD and MECP applicants.
Transfer / CLEP & DANTES Credits
Students transferring to Old Dominion University from another regionally accredited college or university must send official transcripts to the university’s Office of Admissions as a component of the application for university admission as a degree-seeking student. That office will complete an official evaluation of transfer credit upon formal admission to the university and will post the transfer credit on Leo-Online. To be considered for transfer, a course grade of C or better must have been earned. There is no limitation on the age of previously earned credits for transfer. Students are encouraged to complete all courses for transfer prior to enrolling at ODU. MONARCH TRANSFERMATION is a link that students / prospective students can access to help determine in advance how credits earned in other colleges/universities may transfer to ODU.
Selected CLEP credits and DANTES are approved baccalaureate degree requirements at Old Dominion University. CLEP / DANTES credits may be used to fulfill requirements for selected liberal arts and science courses. CLEP / DANTES scores must be sent directly to the university (Admission’s Office) for consideration.
Transfer of Nursing Credits
Students seeking to transfer NURSING credits from another NLNAC or CCNE accredited BSN program must submit photocopies of all nursing course syllabi for which they desire transfer credit approval. The School of Nursing Admission’s Committee will review the transfer course content for comparability with ODU nursing courses and determine if advanced placement in the BSN curriculum is appropriate.
NOTE: Due to the competitive application process for admission to the pre-licensure Bachelor of Science in Nursing curriculum at Old Dominion University, early admission decisions for active duty military students (STA-21, MECP and AMEDD) will be considered only for those applicants whose cumulative college grade point average is 3.3 or better
