Ophthalmic Technology Program
Program Director: Ms. Lori J. Wood
The Certificate Program in Ophthalmic Technology is jointly offered by the School of Health Professions at Eastern Virginia Medical School (EVMS) and the College of Health Sciences at Old Dominion University (ODU). The 22-month program begins the end of August of each year and is fully accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Ophthalmic Medical Programs (CoA-OMP).
The pre-clinical and general-education courses are offered at or may be transferred into ODU. The clinical courses are offered through EVMS and its affiliates. Students learn and work closely with ophthalmology residents and staff in clinical facilities in Sentara Norfolk General Hospital and many private ophthalmologists' offices.
As a condition of graduation, students are required to sit for the national board certification exams given by the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO).
After successful completion of the program, 60 college credits are earned and may be applied toward a Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences from ODU. The program is one of two that grants college credits leading to a Bachelor of Science degree.
