The Gene W. Hirschfeld School of Dental Hygiene offers a 10-hour Dental Radiation Safety Certification continuing education course 5 times a year. Marketed to regional dental practices and vocational schools for on-the-job trained dental assistants, this course often serves as an introduction to the health education opportunities at Old Dominion. Many participants begin here and are recruited into the dental hygiene program. The enthusiastic positive feedback received by instructor Evelyn Thomson, continues to help foster relationships between the School and the professional community, including the Red Cross, military transition agencies, and vocational institutions, all of which send entire classes of individuals attending their programs to Old Dominion to receive the necessary preparation for this state-required certification examination. The School of Dental Hygiene offered a 20-hour continuing education course for students preparing to take the Dental Hygiene National Board on January 18 - 20, 2008. Nine faculty from the School presented over the course of the weekend. This year's event attracted 90 participants from 13 universities and community colleges from Virginia, North Carolina, Georgia, Washington D.C., New York, New Hampshire, and Minnesota. In addition to students preparing for the national examination, this event continues to attract faculty from other schools who come to Old Dominion for information that they can bring back to their programs. • The 6th annual Gene W. Hirschfeld School of Dental Hygiene Continuing Dental Hygiene Education Winter Weekend will be held at the Sheraton Oceanfront Hotel in Virginia Beach February 26, 27, and 28, 2010. An intensive continuing education program designed to provide participants with 15 CE hours required for re-licensure, the 2010 event will feature four nationally-known speakers presenting on topics relative to clinical practice.
