Admission to the Program

Admission Requirements
For U. S. Students

  • Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university
  • Undergraduate grade point average (GPA) of 2.5 or better. Preference will be given to applicants whose GPA is 3.0 or better.
  • All applicants need to submit a Graduate Record Examination (GRE) score, taken within the last five (5) years
  • Additional consideration will be given for appropriate work experience in a health-related field or a baccalaureate degree in a health related field
  • All applicants must submit an application packet with completed application, two letters of recommendation and a personal statement

For International Students
Requirements for admission include:

  • A Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university with an undergraduate Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.0 or a demonstration of an equivalent degree.
  • Graduate Record Examination (GRE) taken within the last 5 years with a combined score of 1200 on the verbal and quantitative sections and at least a 3.5 on the analytic section for non-probationary admission.
  • TOEFL score of 650 for paper-based test and 278 for computer-based test for applicants whose native language is not English.

International students must abide by all U.S. Immigration laws throughout their enrollment in the program. This includes, but is not limited to, qualifying and obtaining a proper visa prior to attendance.

Prerequisite Courses:To begin the environmental health specialization, students must complete the following courses at the undergraduate level or graduate level; General Biology (8 credits); General Chemistry (8 credits); Introduction to Physics (with a lab) OR Geological Sciences (8 credits); General College Mathematics (preferably pre-calculus level) OR Statistics (3 credits).

Students admitted to the Program may enroll in core courses while satisfying the prerequisites for the environmental health specialization.

Applications for admission are reviewed by the respective college's admissions committee that includes the Graduate Program Director for that field.The MPH admission's committee is composed of 5 representatives (one for each of the College's five schools).The Assistant Dean for Education is a non-voting member of the committee.

Application Deadlines for the MPH in Environmental Health
Applications are accepted each semester with the deadlines for each semester provided below.All materials need to be submitted to the University Admissions Office by that date.Completed applications are forwarded to the College of Health Sciences and the MPH Admissions Committee from the University Admissions Office.

Fall-July 30th
Spring-November 1
Summer-March 1

Tuition

Tuition costs for Master of Public Health (MPH) students are based on the number of credit hours taken per semester.  The tuition rate is that rate set for all graduate students attending ODU.  The current tuition rate may be found at www.odu.edu.af.finance.  Tuition is due at the beginning of each term of your enrollment. Additional costs to the student budget are books, room/board and transportation.

Non-Matriculated Students

Students who are not seeking the Master of Public Health degree may, on a space-available basis, take up to 12 credit hours (make this change and delete this note) offered by the program. If the student is later admitted to the MPH Program, the credit hours will be applied to the degree and the total tuition for the MPH degree adjusted to reflect the amount the student has already paid as a non-matriculate student.  To apply as a non-matriculate student please complete
