Admissions Information: Master of Science in Dental Hygiene

Guidelines for the Master of Science Degree Program in Dental Hygiene.

  1. Formal admission to the University is an initial requirement for admission to the Master of ScienceDegree Program. Applications for graduate admission may be obtained from the Office of Admissions, Old Dominion University, Norfolk, VA 23529-0050, (757)683-3637, online (click here), or by calling toll free 1-800-348-7926.
  2. These documents must be submitted:
    1. Application and official transcripts to the Office of Admissions, Old Dominion University, Norfolk, VA 23529-0050.
    2. Scores from the National Board Dental Hygiene Examination.
    3. Completed recommendation forms from previous clinical supervisor and dental hygiene program director (form provided).
    4. Two letters of recommendation from academic sources (form provided).
    5. A formal written statement of personal goals and objectives.
    6. Completed self-evaluation form.
    7. International applicants must present satisfactory evidence of competence in English by submitting score of at least 550 on the TOEFL.
    8. GRE or Millers Analogy scores (only if you are interested in competing for a University Fellowship).
  3. Possession of a bachelor's degree in dental hygiene or a related field and, in the latter case, have completed an accredited certificate or associate degree program in dental hygiene.
  4. Evidence of an undergraduate overall quality point average of at least 2.8 and an average in the dental hygiene major of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale).
  5. Upon admission, individuals, who have not received their BSDH from ODU are required to participate in a diagnostic writing exercise for evaluation by the staff of the University Writing Center. Graduate students deemed deficient in writing skills will be required to remedy their deficiency.

  7. Academic Common Market. Applicants who are legal residents of Mississippi, South Carolina, Delaware, or Kentucky may qualify as academic common market students and obtain in-state tuition rates. For additional information please visit the following web sites:

Other Requirements

The School of Dental Hygiene reserves the right to require remedial work of any student who does not perform at a level satisfactory for client care. All students are responsible for maintaining current cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) certification. The University maintains liability insurance on students when officially enrolled in the School. Students are required to obtain the hepatitis vaccine.
