James English, M.S.

Assistant Professor

Professor A. James English Jr., REHS is Director of Environmental Health Programs in the College of Health Sciences, School of Community and Environmental Health. He has been at Old Dominion University since August of 1988, Prior to that he was the Director of Environmental Health Services and Deputy Director of Public Health for the City of Norfolk from 1982 - 1988. He served with the Department of Public health as an Environmental health professional from 1974 -1988.

His expertise is in the area of environmental stressors and their effects on the public's health. Specifically his expertise is in the area of food safety, communicable and infectious disease control, mosquito and vector control, water and air pollution and its control, epidemiology and environmental law. He teaches courses in all of these areas. He has recently published chapters in two textbooks including a chapter on Food Safety in "A Primer on Environmental Health for Local Boards of Health".He also authored two chapters on Health Hazards and the Environment in "NEWPAGE: New Portals to Appreciating our Global Environment." He also wrote the forward to the NEWPAGE text, titled "Environmental Programs and Initiatives on the campus of Old Dominion University". He is also one of the seven faculty architects of the NEWPAGE course on the Environment that is required of all freshmen entering the University effective 2004. He has received funding for research in the areas of Solid Waste Characterization Studies for the US Navy and the US Air Force, and Boater Pumpout Education for the Virginia State Health Department and the Hampton Roads Sanitation District Commission.

Professor English is a member of the National Environmental Health Association, the Virginia Environmental Health Association and the Tidewater Environmental Health Association having served as President of the latter two and a State delegate to the former. Other organization memberships include the Norfolk Turning Point Partnership (and its Environmental subcommittee), the Central Atlantic States Association (CASA) of Food and Drug Officials. He was also a founding member of the Virginia Chapter of CASA, a member of SAVE (the Southeastern Association of Virginians for the Environment, the Elizabeth River Project (and a member of its River Monitoring Committee) and the Virginia Conservation Network.

Mr. English currently serves as the Chairman of the Norfolk Environmental Commission a position he has held since 1997. He has been an active member of this City Council appointed Commission since 1994. Prior to that he was a city council appointed commissioner and vice-chairman of the Norfolk Clean Community Commission from 1989 - 1994. He is also a founding board member of the Friends of Norfolk's Environment; a non-profit group dedicated to enhancing Norfolk's environment. Norfolk City Council recently appointed him to the Norfolk Public Health Services Advisory Board.

Since 1997 he has served as a Board member of the Hoffler Creek Wildlife Foundation and Preserve and is currently President of the Board. He also serves on several of its committees. This organization is located in Portsmouth, VA. He is also President of the Wards Corner Civic League in Norfolk and serves on the city council Task Force on Wards Corner and is a member of its executive committee. He is also a member of the Wards Corner Partnership.

Professor English also serves on many School and University committees and is currently a member of the Faculty Senate Executive Committee.
