
Community and Environmental Health Establishes a Chapter of the Upsilon Phi Delta National Honor Society
The College of Health Sciences is pleased to announce that the department of Community and Environmental Health has established a Chapter of the Upsilon Phi Delta National Honor Society. One of the purposes of the Upsilon Phi Delta Honor Society is to recognize students who have achieved distinction in healthcare administration studies in universities and colleges. There are currently eight students who qualify for membership into this society. The Honor Society has been approved by a letter from AUPHA and has provisional approval from the ODU Office of Student Activities and Leadership to establish a chapter at ODU.
The College would like to also recognize Dr. Jackie Sharpe for her efforts in establishing this Honor Society for the BSHS program.
Dental Hygiene’s Lynn Tolle is Awarded ADHA Educator of the Year
ADHA is the organization that represents the interest of 150,000 dental hygienists. Lynn will be recognized during the ADHA Annual Session in June with an expense paid trip to Las Vegas and an additional financial reward. (more)
Dr. Benjamin is Inducted as a Fellow into the American Academy of Nursing
Richardean Benjamin, associate Dean of the College of Health Sciences and associate professor of nursing, was inducted as a Fellow in the American Academy of Nursing in November 2009.
Assistant Dean Debbie Bauman is Appointed a Commissioner at Lake Taylor Transitional Care Hospital
Debbie Blythe Bauman, assistant dean of the College of Health Sciences and associate professor of dental hygiene, was appointed by Mayor Paul D. Fraim as a commissioner of the Hospital Authority of Norfolk, Lake Taylor Transitional Care Hospital.
Dr. Jeng is Appointed to the State Board of Health
Anna Jeng, assistant professor of community and environmental health, was appointed by the Governor to the State Board of Health. The Board provides leadership in planning and policy development for the Commonwealth and the Virginia Department of Health.
February is National Dental Health Month
This month-long national health observance brings together thousands of dedicated dental professionals, health care providers and others to promote the benefits of good oral health to children and adults, caregivers, teachers and many others. (more)

Gianluca DeLeo, Medical Laboratories and Radiation Sciences, to Help Develop Mobile-Phone Software for Autistic Children
A program is being developed by Gianluca DeLeo of Old Dominion University and Gondy Leroy of Claremont Graduate University with financial and technical support from Microsoft’s External Research Group to develop software for mobile phones that uses pictures to help autistic children communicate.(more)
Dental Hygiene Students Assists with Colgate Bright Futures, Bright Smiles Program
Senior dental hygiene students and graduate students assisted the Colgate Bright Futures, Bright Smiles Program in October. The Colgate Dental Van visits various dentally underserved areas in the nation each year. In October 2008, they visited eight elementary schools in Norfolk, Virginia.(more)

Nursing professors Carolyn Rutledge and Laurel Garzon received a $765,000 grant from the U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) to revise the Masters Level Nurse Administrator program and enhance the post masters Nurse Educators Program in order to address issues of Cultural Competency, Health Disparities, and Barriers to care.
